Choose evidence before you choose an opening
Start with the vacancy. Identify one or two responsibilities you can address and a specific reason the work interests you. Then choose evidence from your resume that supports that connection. “Your respected company” could apply anywhere; a reference to an actual responsibility gives the letter a purpose.
The fictional organisations and applicants below do not represent real vacancies, credentials, or employment. The letters contain no assumed performance statistics. Copy the structure if useful, but replace the content. Do not claim that you researched a product, spoke to a team, or used a tool unless you did.
Fresher example: junior software developer

Dear Hiring Team,
I am applying for the Junior Software Developer role at Fictional Harbour Software. Your description of work on internal request-management tools interests me because my final-year project involved building a service-request tracker in Java and SQL.
For that project, I developed request creation, search, and status-update endpoints. I added input validation, wrote tests for invalid requests, and documented local setup so another student could run the application. The work helped me practise explaining design decisions and checking behaviour beyond the successful path.
I completed a Bachelor of Computer Science at Fictional Westfield College in May 2026. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute this foundation while learning your team’s development and review practices. My resume provides further project details, and I would be pleased to discuss my contribution.
Thank you for considering my application.
Kind regards,
Aarav Shah
This letter identifies the role, connects an actual project to a relevant responsibility, and distinguishes education from professional employment. It does not turn a student project into commercial experience. If your strongest evidence is an internship or practical training, use that instead. The fresher resume guide can help you organise it.
Experienced example: customer support associate

Kabir Rao
kabir.rao@example.com
Dear Hiring Team,
I am applying for the Customer Support Associate role at Fictional Orchard Services. The emphasis on written support and clear handovers matches the work I currently do at Fictional Meadow Services, where I handle order enquiries and document cases for follow-up.
In my current role, I review case history, explain order-status updates by email, and record unresolved questions so another adviser can continue the enquiry. When an account-access problem needs technical investigation, I gather reproducible details and coordinate the handover rather than promising a fix I cannot authorise.
I am interested in bringing this approach to a team that values clear customer communication and careful case records. My resume describes the relevant responsibilities and dates. I would welcome a conversation about your support process and how my experience could contribute.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Kabir Rao
The second letter develops a specific working practice rather than repeating every resume bullet. It separates the applicant’s own responsibility from the technical team’s authority. Replace the employer-interest sentence with a reason supported by the real vacancy.
Customise the letter without stretching the facts
- Confirm the role and employer. Use the correct job title and recipient. If you do not know a person’s name, use a professional team greeting rather than inventing one.
- Select a genuine connection. Choose a responsibility that relates to your work, training, or project. The skills guide explains how to map requirements to evidence.
- Explain one useful example. State what you did and why it mattered. Do not add a number or credential to make the letter appear stronger.
- Check consistency. Dates, tools, job titles, and qualifications must agree with the resume. Use the resume examples to review the supporting entries.
- Close with a clear next step. Express interest in discussing the role without assuming an interview or promising an outcome.
Export and review both documents together
Follow the employer’s requested format and length. Keep the letter easy to read, proofread the company name, and check that an old employer or greeting has not survived a copied draft. Read it aloud once; remove sentences that sound impressive but do not communicate a specific fact.
The CareerLift workspace provides local drafting assistance based on the facts you enter. It does not verify those facts or call an external AI service. Creating, editing, and previewing are free. PDF and Word downloads use one-time checkout; the exact total is shown after choosing Download and before payment. The purchase covers the saved application’s resume and cover letter in both formats.
Check page breaks and selectable text in the final files. The resume format guide explains PDF and Word trade-offs. A letter can help a reader understand your evidence, but cannot guarantee an ATS result, interview, or job.
